An Interview with Mr.Carsten Brinkschulte from Synchronica plc.

About Your company

Synchronica plc develops and markets mobile email and synchronization solutions for mobile operators and device manufacturers. Products include the award-winning push email and synchronization solution Mobile Gateway and the device backup solution Mobile Backup. Based on industry standards, Synchronica can reach the built-in email and synchronization clients of more than 1.5 billion mobile devices on the market today. Service providers in emerging and developed markets use Synchronica products to offer mobile email, PIM synchronization, and backup and restore services to consumer and business subscribers.

Synchronica recently acquired AxisMobile Limited, the operating subsidiary of Synchronica's competitor, AxisMobile plc. As a result of this acquisition, Synchronica is set to become the global leading developer of mass-market mobile email and synchronization middleware. AxisMobile developed a number of email technologies suitable for the consumer mass-market, and this intellectual property is now fully-owned by Synchronica, which will be integrated in order to create an enhanced Synchronica Mobile Gateway that will offer the most comprehensive multi-protocol mobile email solution in the market today, introducing email-to-SMS and email-to-MMS, as well as WAP and XHTML gateways. Document transcoding will add the ability to display a large variety of attachments, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on standard feature phones.

Headquartered in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Synchronica has a development center in Germany and presence in the USA, Hong Kong, and Dubai. Synchronica plc is a public company traded on the AIM list of the London Stock Exchange (SYNC.LN).

Telecom Products & Solutions in your company

Synchronica develops three solutions.

Mobile Gateway provides push email and synchronization to both prosumer and business users. Compatible with the widest range of mass market phones, Mobile Gateway provides push email and synchronization without the need to install additional software or make changes to the customer's firewall configuration settings. Combining the industry standards Push IMAP (LEMONADE) and SyncML (OMA DS) for the synchronization of calendar, contacts, notes, and tasks, Mobile Gateway supports most mobile devices in the market, making use of their inbuilt messaging clients - so end users do not need to install additional software onto their phones.

Synchronica's consumer email product, SimpleMail brings realtime email connectivity via an email-to-SMS and email-to-MMS gateways and a clientless solution for WAP / XHTML browser access. It also features a patented Optimizer transcoding gateway which reduces the size of pictures and allows a large variety of attachments, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents, to be displayed on feature phones that would otherwise be unable to support this functionality. Synchronica SimpleMail provides a mobile email service to the most basic of handset, and is an ideal solution for subscribers in emerging markets.

Finally Synchronica's Mobile Backup backs up data stored on mobile phones, and insures against the loss of this data, and indeed operator revenues. Users can sign up for the service using the internet, a WAP interface, or by sending an SMS. Mobile Backup combines the industry standards SyncML (OMA DS) for backup and restore of PIM data with OMA CP for easy hassle-free setup of the service.

How Different are your Products from Competition.

Two key features of our products are unmatched by competing solutions. It is possible to access an email attachment via a mobile device using the transcoding engine that is built into SimpleMail. Additionally, our products do not require any software to be installed onto the subscriber's mobile device; or in the case of business customers, the modification of corporate firewall settings.

Finally, as all Synchronica products are built on industry standards, it is straightforward and inexpensive to interface our products into 3rd party applications such as Advertising Generators, Lawful Interception software, Customer Care and Billing Systems, or Enterprise Resource Planning solutions.

Tell about Yourself

I am a software engineer by training, and tend to combine both my practical technical knowledge, with a detailed knowledge of the IT and telecoms industries, and an entrepreneurial spirit. I have successfully started and run several technology companies, and can boast considerable commercial experience.

I am actively involved with all the leading worldwide standards bodies. These include the Open Mobile Alliance, Internet Engineering Task Force, CalConnect and the LEMONADE group. I have been instrumental in helping to drive the development of interoperable technologies that are compatible with the majority of mobile devices. This support of open industry standards is critical for making mobile synchronisation services such as email, mobile PIM and backup and restoration of contacts accessible to everyone, even users of low cost devices with very tiny budgets. I regularly speak at key industry events across the world, to explain my vision to industry peers.

I also firmly believe in leading from the front, and that the only way to truly understand your markets is to go there and see them for yourself. In 2007 and 2008 I visited a number of developing countries to meet with mobile operators and to see first-hand what conditions are like in these emerging markets. Bangladesh, Sudan, Nigeria, India, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America have all been visited by myself, and they have provided me with a rich source of information on the mobile market in these areas, as well as strong views on how the mobile user experience will be shaped in these regions over the coming months and years.
