An Interview with Mr. Frederic Schepens from Belgacom International Carrier Services | |
| | | About Your company
Belgacom International Carrier Services (Belgacom ICS) is a subsidiary of the Belgacom Group. Belgacom was the first telecommunications company in Belgium and still a market leader in many fields, particularly in wholesale and retail fixed line services, mobile communications (Proximus), and Internet and broadband data transmission services.
Over the last couple of years, Belgacom Group has deliberately seperated financial reporting of its International Carrier Services to heighten financial transparency and accountability of its activities in contrast to many of our peers. On January 1st 2005 the international carrier activities were transferred into a wholly-owned subsidiary, Belgacom International Carrier Services SA.
In order to respond more effectively to the increasing competitiveness of the international carrier market, a next milestone was accomplished on July 1st 2005. Belgacom SA and Swisscom Fixnet AG agreed to consolidate their international carrier businesses into a joint venture company Belgacom International Carrier Services. This transaction enabled Belgacom ICS to reinforce its market position and competitiveness in the international carrier market while realizing synergies. Belgacom SA owns 72% of the shares in the new company and Swisscom Fixnet 28%.
In the meantime, Belgacom ICS continued to capitalise fully on its long-established experience in carrier telecom operations together with its global network as well as its unique location in the heart of Europe. This has made of Belgacom ICS one of the most sought-after global voice and data transit service providers and the ideal partner for demanding telecom operators, all around the world.
The company offers the best price/quality ratio to wireline and wireless operators as well as service providers worldwide. Belgacom ICS is at the forefront of the international communications industry, acting as a catalyst for growth, both in terms of traffic and reach. The aim of the company is to enable global interworking across all communication standardized services.
As a result of this approach and the joint venture with Swisscom ICS, Belgacom International Carrier Services is now one of the largest wholesale carriers worldwide based on voice traffic volumes and a world leader in mobile data transit services. Operators and service providers all over the world praise Belgacom ICS for its focus on overall quality, operational excellence and its capacity to deliver a distinctive competitive edge to customers.
Belgacom International Carrier Services serves more than 500 customers, of which over 200 mobile operators, through sales offices in Brussels, Bern, Dubai, Singapore and New York. It owns a worldwide network expanding towards Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the United States through almost 90 PoP's in 45 cities and 30 countries. In 2007 Belgacom ICS transported in total over 14 billion minutes and achieved a revenue of 1 billion Euro.
Vision
Telecommunication Providers Will Offer Their Converging Solutions Any Time, Anywhere and on Any Device, over Multiple Networks
Wholesale Carriers Will Enable Efficient Service Delivery and Seamless Interworking in a Consolidated Market
Mission
Be the Hub and Service Enabler of Choice for Telecom Providers Worldwide
Deliver a Comprehensive and Unique Set of Solutions through a Winning Team of Professionals Whose Ultimate Goal is Customer Satisfaction
Strategy
Belgacom International Carrier Services' strategy is articulated around three axes. The first axis is to become the market leader through further consolidation and insourcing partnerships. Belgacom International Carrier Services will continue to leverage the Swisscom reference with potential partner operators in Europe, and propose outsourcing to operators in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The second strategic axis centres around an all-IP capability in infrastructure and services. Finally, Belgacom International Carrier Services will investigate organic and inorganic opportunities to expand the service offering to mobile operators, building on the Belgacom brand, reach and extensive customer portfolio in this segment. |
